Checked Baggage For Northwest Airlines*
Coach Class: For tickets purchased on/after July 10, 2008 for travel on/after August 28, 2008, each ticketed passenger is allowed one (1) piece of checked luggage for a fee of USD $15 each-way and a second pieced of checked luggage for a fee of USD $25 each-way. Third and subsequent pieces will be assessed a fee of USD $100 per piece each-way. 

Checked Baggage requirements:
Checked Luggage Weight and Measurement  Luggage is measured by adding length, width and height to determine the total number of linear inches.

Northwest will accept luggage up to a maximum of 50 pounds and a total linear dimension of 62 inches per piece at no charge. Additional charges may apply for luggage weighing more than 50 pounds or with a total linear dimension of more than 62 inches per piece. For domestic and trans-Atlantic travel, the maximum weight accepted for any piece of checked luggage, including special luggage items, is 70 pounds. For trans-Pacific travel, the maximum weight accepted for any piece of checked luggage is 100 pounds.
Note: If you are flying on a codeshare partner, please check with the operating carrier for maximum acceptance rules as they may vary.

Checked Luggage Allowance

  • Domestic Travel (within the U.S./Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean)
    • Coach Class: For tickets purchased on/after July 10, 2008 for travel on/after August 28, 2008, each ticketed passenger is allowed one (1) piece of checked luggage for a fee of USD $15 each-way and a second pieced of checked luggage for a fee of USD $25 each-way. Third and subsequent pieces will be assessed a fee of USD $100 per piece each-way. 
      1. Each piece: 50 pounds (23 kg) with linear dimensions not to exceed 62 inches (158 cm).
      2. Northwest Airlines' Silver, Gold and Platinum WorldPerks® Elite customers, SkyTeam Elite customers and passengers booked in full fare classes (Y or B) may check two bags free of charge. Customers seated in First Class may check up to three bags free of charge. Luggage in excess of these special free allowances will be charged a fee of $100 per piece each-way.
    • First Class: Each ticketed passenger is allowed three (3) checked pieces.
      1. First two (2) pieces: 70 pounds (32 kg) with linear dimensions not to exceed 62 inches (158 cm) per piece.
      2. Third piece: 40 pounds (18 kg) with linear dimensions not to exceed 45 inches (115 cm).

Note: The same free checked luggage allowance applies to children and infants paying at least 50% of the adult fare. Infants traveling free of charge do not qualify for free checked luggage allowance but are permitted to carry on a diaper bag, free of charge.For travel between the United States mainland and Hawaii, one container of fruit will be allowed to the normal free luggage allowance for a fee of $10.00. The maximum weight permitted is 10 pounds.

Domestic: The following charges apply to luggage in excess of the domestic free luggage allowance. Domestic travel includes the 50 United States, Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean.

Excess, Overweight & Oversized Luggage and Applicable Fees: 
Northwest realizes that at times it may be necessary to travel with an item that exceeds the size or weight limitations or to travel with additional pieces of luggage.  Additional charges apply in these situations.

All charges are calculated on a one-way basis and are collected at the airport ticket counter.
Code-share passengers will be charged as though they were traveling on one airline (fees will be that of the boarding carrier).  Military Luggage is subject to different charges when overweight (see Military Luggage for details).  Certain items of sports equipment may be subject to different charges when oversized (see Sports Equipment for details).
